A beginner to intermediate level qualification exploring spirits and liqueurs for those working in the industry or spirits enthusiasts.

For individuals wishing to develop their expertise in spirits and liqueurs, you’ll learn about the fundamental production methods and principal raw materials discovering how they are used to make the key spirit styles. You’ll also explore the key practices and principles of serving spirits and the use of spirits in cocktails. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

Prerequisites

  • There are no prerequisites for WSET Level 2 Spirits

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years of age to participate.

Course Structure

  • 5 weeks online self-paced study, with access to a WSET online moderator for the duration of the course.

  • Minimum requirement of 26 hours of study time, including 14 hours of online learning time

What you’ll learn:

  • How to taste and describe spirits using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT)

  • The techniques used during the four stages of spirits production: processing the raw material, alcoholic fermentation; distillation; and post-distillation operations

  • How techniques used during the four stages of production determine the style of a spirit

  • How aromatized wines are made

  • How a balanced cocktail is made and examples in four notable cocktail families (the spirit-forward, the short sour, the highball and the long sour)

  • How local production traditions, coupled with local laws, are used to create different styles of spirits

Exam Details

  • Online Remotely Invigilated (RI) exam consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. Exam dates are listed next to each course option.

  • Candidates must meet the requirements outlined in WSET’s RI Exam Essential Guidance.

  • Candidates who are unable to meet the RI Exam requirements must inform us BEFORE registration, and arrange to take a paper exam in-person at our office in Richmond.

  • Candidates who fail a qualification, or have a RI Exam invalidated for any of the reasons outlined in the RI Exam Essential Guidance, will be allowed to resit the exam until successful. The fee for each resit attempt is $100 for Level 1 qualifications, and $130 for Level 2 qualifications. If candidates do not wish to resit via Remote Invigilation, they must arrange for a paper exam in-person in Richmond, VA.

  • Students with disabilities or documented special educational needs may apply for reasonable adjustments for either RI or paper exams. Applications must be conferred to WSET at least 4 weeks before the exam date.   • VAWSA receives exam results from WSET within 6 weeks of the exam date, and reports those scores individually to candidates upon receipt.
